“Escape” by Jeannette Timmerman

Let’s ignore the pandemic.

Let’s run away.

Flying?

Too risky.

People sitting too close in rows.

Car trips?

Not an option.

Motels may not be sanitized.

Well?

Let’s pitch a tent

among the junipers

in the backyard

and camp.

We can burn

rabbit droppings

to keep us warm,

eat snow for moisture,

scattered bird seed

for our meals and snacks.

And in the spring sprout

sunflowers from our ears.
